It's all about having fun.
Sandy Bay's focus is on participation and having fun - no matter what your ability you can join our Club!
We can help you improve and achieve your potential. You don't have to be the fastest or strongest out there. You just need to love your athletics.
"Senior" Athletics is fun! Perhaps you you did athletics at school or have been a Little Athlete... or perhaps you're completely new to the sport. Regardless, we'd love to meet you.
Athletics is for all the family!
Unlike some other sports, athletics is truly family-oriented - entire families are welcome to get involved at any level - by competing, officiating, training, coaching or simply by cheering from the sidelines. And it doesn't matter how fast or strong you are.
In Track & Field, you compete against people of a similar grade (Men / Women) or standard to yourself. It's more about personal improvement than winning.
Cross Country is great for all the family - some people prefer to make it a social event, whilst others enjoy the competition. It's all up to you :-)
News & Rantings
[View past stories]Foster again under 1:48 (14/6/09)
Posted by ian in Club Happenings.
Ryan Foster has backed up from his outstanding efforts in the earlier rounds to take 8th place in the Final of the 800m at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, again dipping under 1:48 with a time of 1:47.81.
Foster showed guts, repeating his fast starting strategy against a strong field. Although finding himself several places back with 500m to go, a determined effort had him placed second coming into the home straight. However, despite a strong last 100m, Foster was unable to hold his position as he was passed by his more experienced competitors, with Thursday's semi final effort perhaps taking its toll.
Foster is now ranked as the fastest Australian over 800m in 2009, and has lowered the club's 800m record by almost a second.
Foster through to Final - 1:46.78 (12/6/09)

Ryan Foster has backed up from yesterday's personal best run to qualify second fastest for the Men's 800m Final at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Again taking the first lap out hard in fifty one seconds, Foster held it together to finish a clear second behind US Olympian Andrew Wheating, this time in an unbelievable personal best time of 1:46.78.
The final will be held Saturday at 12.28pm ET (That's 3.28am Sunday morning, so be sure to set your alarm clocks everyone!).

Thomas, MacFarlane Named Tasmanian Athletes of the Year (13/5/2009)
Posted by ian in Club Happenings.
Congratulations to Sandy Bay's champion pair Donna MacFarlane and Tristan Thomas who were named as Tasmania's best male and female athlete respectively at the Athletics Tasmania Athlete of the Year Party for 2009.
MacFarlane and Thomas also received awards for their domination in their respective individual event categories, with Thomas taking out the award for 'Sprints/hurdles' and McFarlane for 'Middle distance/Walks.
Meanwhile Tristan Thomas has again demonstrated that he has what it takes to mix it with the world's best. Competing in Osaka, Japan, on the weekend, Thomas came within eight hundredths of a second of defeating the USA's reigning world champion Kerron Clement. In the process Thomas sliced .18 off his lifetime best, lowering the Tasmanian record to a stellar 48.68 seconds.
Congratulations must go also to talented Sandy Bay Youngsters Allie Britton, Jarred Gilroy and Max Waldron who have been nominated in the AT/TIS Development squad for 2009/2010. An exceptional achievement in particular for Max Waldron, who showed rapid improvement in his first season competing for the club.

Foster Flies to Personal Best (12/4/2009)
Posted by ian in Club Happenings.
One week after opening his season with a solid victory over 800m in blustery Arizona (1.50.85), Ryan Foster has defied Pennsylvania's cold and windy conditions to record a massive outdoor 800m personal best of 1.48.79 - his first run under 1.50, bettering the previous best he recorded while winning the 2006 State Championship.
The personal best effort reportedly came with energy to spare as Foster was forced to move ahead of the faltering pacemakers early after 500m.
Foster's time ranks him unofficially at equal tenth in Australia for 2009, and second in early season rankings for US collegiate circuit.

Foster Named Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year (25/3/2009)
Posted by ian in Club Happenings.
Sandy Bay middle distance star and former World Youth Championships representative Ryan Foster has gone from strength to strength since his move to Pennsylvania State University, USA.
Competing indoors, Foster has already recorded personal bests over 800m (1.49.68), 1000m(2.23.69) and the mile (4:08.99), also splitting an unofficial 1.48.9 in his leg of the 4x800m. His consistency over the indoor season has not gone unacknowledged. Foster was recently named as recipient of the prestigious Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year award.
Protege of the late Max Cherry, Foster will be an athlete to watch in upcoming months, as American college athletes prepare to commence their outdoor season in April, culminating in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
