About Sandy Bay Harriers
Sandy Bay Harriers, Inc. is the oldest athletics club in Tasmania (est. 1927). The club participates in the local track and field events and cross country competition.
Over the years, Sandy Bay has produced numerous champions who have represented their club at the highest level - including the Olympic Games, World Championships, Oceana Games, Commonwealth Youth Games and the World Cup.
Most recently in 2005, Donna MacFarlane competed for Australia in the Chiba Ekiden road relay Championships, which is held in Japan. Donna also competed at the Zatopek (Melbourne, 2005) and ran a Commonwealth Games A qualifier for the 3000m Steeplechase. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games she was able to run a 10 second PB (9:25.05) to pick up the Bronze. One week later, Donna competed in the 2006 World Cross Country Championships (Short Course) in Fukuoka, Japan, where the Australian team won a bronze medal.
Ryan Foster represented Australia in the 2000m Steeplechase at the 2005 World Youth Championships (Marrakesh, Morocco).
Another fine Sandy Bay athlete, Tristan Thomas, is currently on a scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the heats of 400m Hurdles, Tristan ran a PB of 49.88 to make the semi-finals, where he placed 5th (50.56), narrowly missing out on running the final.
In 2001, Scott Wells participated in the Commonwealth Youth Games. In the 2004 Olympic Games, two past Sandy Bay members competed - Simon Burgess (captain of the Australian Olympic Rowing Team) and Will Hamlyn-Harris, who competed in Javelin and now lives in NSW, in the 2006 Commonwealth Games he picked up Silver.
Of course, most of our members simply love their athletics and the many benefits it brings, such as improved fitness and making new friends. Come along and have sun fun!
We also have numerous Life Members and Club Patrons.
