I have requested with AS an invitational 100m or 200m for program 4 this Saturday either in place of or as well as (most likely as well as) the 60m.

I am wondering whether any forum participants would support this whether they be coaches, athletes or officials? After a solid past week and a half of grass comp running I would like the opportunity for the sprinters to get in some more solid races early in the post christmas part of the season to get some speed back in their grass legs.

A reminder to to all the guys running in the twilight meet tonight that did the carnivals, change your spikes back unless you want to get stuck in the track and rip a hammy!!
thanks for that Dom, good to see you are pumped to get back up there and that is the attitude that needs to prevail!

A good example of the blatant rule breaking etc is that a runner whom only runs in the pro's walked away froma race at Burnie after placing their blocks and doing a couple of warm up run throughs (carrying an injury I believe) which should incur a suspension and fine. This was ignored and the same athlete won a major race later in the day, obviously thinking that they had a bigger chance in the other race? The same athlete won again in Hobart yesterday apparently and has been winning consistently for some time however their mark never seems to change and is always in the top 3 of this distance (notice I am not mentioning names, races or anything).

Apparently there is a reluctance to change marks greatly.

Also novice marks mean the athlete is to be placed in a middle mark unless their times are astonishing aka Crossa. 15 yr old girls in their 1st season of athletics full stop let alone the carnivals should not be placed on a novice (Tasmanian version back mark) mark and be the back marker. The aforementioned young lady only was not the absolute back marker when she had Taylor or Whiley in her races. A similar 15 yr old in her first carnival from the north of the state was many metres ahead of the young lady I coach. The 2 girls in question when running against each other in school carnivals have split their races

Use these examples to test your mental strength but do not let them defeat you. I urge everyone to book accommodation now for the next series and launch a southern assault on the carnivals and hopefully a large group supporting each other will assist the athletes to achieve highly!
Damo! Ouch on that last paragraph, 23m!! No way. Thats rough, must've been a great final to see the male athlete get up on the line! A very big congrats to your 15yr old on making the semi final, like you said very good running there!

I read your all your article in the Aths South newsletter, about the suggestions for handicapped training and allowing females to race in the mens races.. couldn't agree more. I guess one weakness that somebody brought home to me post PSG racing was the lack of differing competion in the prepatory phase, and the carnivals provide a great means of improving this. Throughout the trip i constantly said how different the carnivals races are to the track, and it was bloody brilliant from that sense.

Overall the carnivals were decent, just would be nice to see some common sense used. None of this "23m lifts" or the obvious "foxing" that goes on; the amount of time front runners got up over the many athletes who had to work hard in the heats was getting a bit much! Still, after it all, i'm very darn motivated to get back on the track for some good quality sessions to smash out these 'foxers' next year... if only they'd come up to the track...
_________________
Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. Whilst it was remarked that crowds were down in numbers from previous years, it was overwhelming to see the stands at the Latrobe, Burnie and Devonport carnivals fill up with spectators; as well as to hear stories from the more 'senior' members of my training group (steve rae aka gramps) telling of times when athletics in Tasmania was reflected in the way of a big turn outs to such events....

What happened?

There were heaped turn outs both on and off the grass track at carnivals; yet at interclub they are no where to be seen. I live for the day when crowds like I saw over the last week turn up for an interclub?

To the "pro" runners. Whilst i understand that as this was my first year i was bound to get mm... not the greatest marks to say it nicely. However for those of us who are track athletes, we strive to bust our arses off at training in order to continually improve our times week after week after week.. yet this in turn results in us getting mugged by handicappers, yet, these pro runners strut out on the grass for the mini carnivals and get put forward in their marks something shocking.

The suggestiong about the VAL system is a very good one...!

Take a look at the VAL Guidelines for Hanicapping:
http://www.val.org.auHANDICAPPING%20GUIDELINES%20-%20October%202008.pdf
[Steve, you should look at guideline b's note because if this system were in place, you wouldn't have been mugged.]

A quote from the VAL website itself:

"What is handicapped racing?
Handicapped racing is designed to ensure that every athlete has a chance to win. This means that athletes are allocated a handicap according to their ability. The fastest runner is placed on a backmark and gives a start to slower runners. This ensure that racing is close and exciting, with spectacular finishes. Stewards and Handicappers keep an eye on all runners to ensure they run to the best of their ability and do not deliberately run slow to get a better handicap. The stewards can fine athletes that are found to be deliberately running slow or do not provide correct details about past performances. Athletes who are new to the sport generally start from the “novice” handicap which is somewhere in the middle of the field. Their handicap is then adjusted as appropriate after the handicapper has seen them compete a few times. Handicap racing is an Australian tradition where every competitor is given a chance to share in success."

Despite being brief, seems pretty fair to me? Thoughts? A novice handicap in the middle of the field...? What a novel idea, not at the back of the pack! Azza is right in what he's said. For instance: burnie 400m, only a few days ago. Not to name names but an mainland runner who can run a solid 47 on the track was placed at the exact same mark as a novice 51-52 runner?!

I could go on all day quoting the VAL, but I applaude them in their effort to put work in and ensure an equitable system that encourages those new to the system, through a fair novice mark process but too rewards the "getting there.." and "more seasoned runners" for their committment to a great system. "This ensure that racing is close and exciting, with spectacular finishes".

Whilst away we had a fines system going on in our group, for those of us who... you could say did some stupid things. We got about $200 over the week to ensure a safe return home via taxi's after the New Years Celebrations...

"The stewards can fine athletes that are found to be deliberately running slow [aka foxing] or do not provide correct details about past performances." If this were true i do believe that the stewards could safely return home in limo's or as such, because they would've tallied up one heck of a lot of fines......

What are the thoughts on the carnivals, pro's, con's, improvments etc.?

A very puffed out, D.A. [back scratcher, chocolate rain!]

Well Dom you have brought up many great points about the shortcomings of the system, it was interesting to read an article on a young NW coaster in the Advocate running her 2nd carnival series ever and talking about running from the backmarks, of course being NW coaster meant this athlete was actually running from a front mark all through the series and making finals. My athletes including a 15 yr old girl competing for the first time were off novice marks (hers was the back mark every time unless running against Taylor or Whiley) and she actually made a semi at D'Port in the 200m. My advice to all athletes is go to the carnivals but if you go to win you are going for the wrong reasons I have discussed at length with my athletes the merit of these carnivals and how they are to approach them. They are a great experience and one way in my c ase I can get my sprinters some real tough, nationals like experience into them. Nothing shows an athletes character like a good chase! Now I understand Dom's and Steve's frustration however you guys know that you have these people's measure in a flat race don't you well if you can catch them at some stage in a handicap race that means you are running very well!!

Let your coach worry about the politics and the marks etc and you guys worry about what you can control, that is how you run. If you are thinking about marks you are gone before the race begins.

My advice to all southern coaches is get your athletes to do the carnivals every year, or at least a couple to get tough racing in the holiday season and it also helps keep them on track during a time where they can lose condition very quickly.

You think you were hard done by Dom, I had an athlete in a maiden at D'Port whom the year before ran against a northern athlete whom was 1m behind her and beat her on the line, the same race this year the girl whom beat her was, wait for it, 23m ahead of her The maiden at D'Port was set up so no female would beat this girl and she ended up just being beaten on the line by a 15yr old Burnie schoolboy whom nobody has heard of in his first year, he got a very nice mark as well. This athlete of mine is female and was placed on the men's marks and when she asked before the race if it was indeed correct the response was "nothing we can do about it". I used to lose sleep over it, now I don't worry about it and actually laugh at it. Another of my runners is in his 3rd year of carnivals however has been only brought forward 1 metre in 3 years and has been injured for 2 of them and using them as his comeback races for each season, this season was his first where he was almost injury free but still underdone by about 6 weeks and once again was novice marked against faster guys. His attitude was great and he enjoyed each carnival and achieved what we set out to do, get into semi's as many times as possible!

If anyone would like to write to TAL with concerns this years handicapper was Sandra Davidson (Skeggs), you know the blond lady whom won the masters race at D'Port
As a first time athlete at the 2008/09 christmas carnivals, it has been a worthwhile experience.

_________________
Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

as a successful athlete ($1300- 10% for drinking fund) at these carnivals (finally) i feel as though steves comments are true in some regard. there has been so many times i have believed i would win easily but instead be beaten by a carnival cheats. I loved my expericences this year and i am going to stawell this year with the hope i would go ok, but guess wat, i believe that the T.A.L athletes would not be given good marks similiar to the V.A.L and the NSW athletes that came to the T.A.L carnivals. I hope that i am wrong when i and daniel reeves head to stawell this year.

Tonight i did however win the naked gift at Burnie in a time that would have won the actual gift (400m). For those in the know the mile was a great back up farse seriously can you win a race three times and not get dragged????
A great experience and will only improve motivation......$5 is great motivation someone get the string out.
From a competitors point of view the Christmas carnivals are nothing more than just pocket money for greedy North/North West athletes if you can call them that. I have never seen so much foxing in heats and in lead up 'pro' races in order to gain better marks. Richard Welsh was clearly drunk when writing his weekly dribble when he described this practice as being 'passe' or did he really mean 'past'? From what i saw it was the past.

Handicaps are not helped by the fact that these pro runners don't get on the track something i believe renders them soft. It would be great to see these pro guys and girls in action on the track heck ill give them 10m and $5. One suggestion that has been floating around was using the VAL system with a credible performance system. I feel this will encourage better racing more excitment and more mainland and southern athletes to compete.

Yes as most of you are probably aware i didn't win anything and have come back with negative money much to the disappointment of Pip. You could say i pulled an Ali Snieder.
Who?

I would like to make sure everyone is aware that Azza is the missing secondary manager and acclaimed "night stalker of Carotel".

He was invaluable to many athletes with his call room pearls of wisdom to nervous first timers such as "if you don't win don't come back" and "when I won my 5th medal at nationals I ran the first lap in" and to one athlete whom had just run a Pb but missed a finals spot by a small margin "what was that crap"

Seriously though Azza was great and all the managers felt as a group that we worked well together. Azza's ability to find the warm up area without a compass was extrordinary and if he had worn a pedometer he surely would have walked/jogged 20-30 klms per day, then another 10klms per night at the Carotel as the "night stalker"

well done Azza you are a legend and good luck at the Carnivals, good luck with the racing too

Haha, golden! yeh we shouldve worn pedometers at the PSG's, wouldve smashed 100km in 3 days easy.
Carnivals should be fun, unsure bout the racing bit. Hopefully that goes ok too and the devonport 800m final is in my grasp!

If we go to the TAL website all the marks and heats are up for the major carnivals and they all appear to be crackers of meets, Burnie has big gift fields and I notice some of the old stagers are in line for a run, Steve Rae and Joel Deegan to name but two so cannot wait.

Tristan Thomas has entered the 400m at Devonport in what will be a highlight, running off 5m, this guys can chase so he could run from behind scratch and still make a catch so could be a huge run and Jana Rawlinson is making an appearance as well. As usual the marks will make for good conversation with some people being looked after and others, well we shall just leave it at that but all in all, looks like a great week.

Keep an eye out fro Clinton Brown in the mens sprints, is a footy player who can actually sprint and has some very nice marks so could be a contender and a young kid called Sam Rundle, another footy player who has some reasonable skates as well and of course the blonde flash from Devonport Bradley MacDonald back from a knee reco, all 3 I am told would be very competitive at interclub and if were not footballers would push our best? Well Brad Mac would he can really run!

Tom Beard is making a bit of a mini comeback so will be good to see him go around again and Monbo Jetoh is going to make an appearance after being at PSG and learning a lot about the sport and will have a real crack. Hope Azza Humphrey's body holds up and Sammy Morey whom apparently has been training for Devonport for past 5 years (sic) seriously good week if anyone has little planned, come up and take a look.
The December Newsletter is out. Once again it is full of info and articles.

It seems that there are a couple of people who always put in articles, what about other people adding to it or even suggesting what they would like.

Email the people let them know, personally I am enjoying writing the articles as it makes me research.

The queries I have are the articles relevant, understandable and do you want them to keep going.
_________________
Darren A

I can't remember when the field last boasted 27 starters, regardless of form or ability.

While the physique of many of these guys had changed (some more than others!!), it brought back many great memories to be running alongside old rivals.

The decision made by AT to allow "open day registration" was vindicated with numbers accross all events a joy to behold. The results for the Tas Bevis for example suggest the field may have only been 5 strong had the "extras" not been included.

Well done AT and Athletics South for a great day, and a memory to last a lifetime.

Well said, having been well at the back of the field in many 3 and 5km races won by the Foleys, Giblins, Dalton, Garretts etc, I was actually wishing I had entered as well, might have almost been competitive

Hopefully this can be repeated in the future, and it is pity there was the sad undertone to the motivation. Is it possible for someone to keep us updated as to Albert's health please.

And by the way, the results are up on the AS website.
You might recall the north vs south match was cancelled from Penguin last summer, so if club champs are not held in Penguin this summer they will have gone two complete seasons without a state meet. The AT board has an ongoing commitment to the NW.

Remember some of the states best senior athletes of recent years (Hicks, Kay, Whiley, etc) are from the NW and athletes, fans, family from the NW deserve to see or compete against the states best without travelling all the time..

I think it is still AT policy to have the AT events evenly spread through the state.

just a question, has or is there a way we can determine whether venue adversly affects numbers in the state? I respect what Azza is saying and have no probs travelling to Penguin at all, lovely place and have rellies up the NWest so visit regularly however if we have meets in the NW and nobody goes ,why have them there? is it the meet is not what people regard as important any more?

Kev made a good point, it isn't about winning every event but maybe our athletes now only want to do their preferred events and compete whenever they feel like it? if it is not working it needs to be done better, what about a twilight club champs at Penguin giving people a later start to get there all the way from the north given the southern clubs go anyway
Just a further note on upcoming event, for those starved of 800's due to programming of memorial races and the postponing of state club champs, a non-points scoring invitational 800 has been approved to be held on Sat 10 Jan at the AS interclub, immediately after the 400... see AS calendar for details....
This does two things:-
This evergreen and veteran athlete unfortunately will be away for club champs apparently a ploy by OVA to reschedule the meet knowing I would be away

Damo,
Some surprising figures for Sandy Bay male throwers!

I am assuming by all this you mean people whom have thrown an implement this season? I have been asking my athletes to do a throw each week as something different than just running and in past club champs a couple have been in throwing events but apart from the odd one or two I wouldn't say they were throwers in any stretch of the imagination and as throws fields are very large this season these guys would still only have a couple of throws before often having to warm up for their main event on the track. They wouldn't be throwing in all liklihood at club champs out of choice unless on other option. I love the use of stats but they do not really prove anything as SB didn't enter any teams to the best of my knowledge? Maybe someone from the SB committee could answer as to why?

Remember though, to win the Club championships you don't have to win every event.

These SB throwers throw every week in the senior ranks. The Lyden & Sullivan "boys" together with Rowan most weeks in the Javelin.

I spoke to Mark yesterday, I believe an effort will be made to attempt to get teams together for the new date of February 14th.
_________________
Kev
I would be very disappointed if someone who had never been involved in athletics turned up and won one of these events. These non-athletics athletes, or potential athletes had a number of opportunities to do this before the end of November, and don't think that is the reasoning behind this request to Aths tas.

I am of the belief that the main theory was to allow past athletes of Max Cherry to compete in the inaugural max Cherry memorial event.

understand Jarrod, looking more at long term isssue of better promoting opportunities to engage new people to the sport. I don't really believe there would be anyone out there good enough to knock off a Pagey or Daniels over the distance but I suppose you never know, maybe Hag's out of retirement?? or Steve Rae, he does everything else so why not 1500's

Sandy Bay has less than 50 registered athletes I believe and most are middle to long and cross country runners, no field athletes to speak of to the best of my knowledge so to put it in a nutshell no teams entered
I can't help myself, I have to jump in here.

Since I compile the results for all the Tasmanian throws rankings, I thought I would look at senior representation for each Tasmanian Club in throws events.

I track all throwers who achieve better than 40% of the national standard for the age group, but the actual state rankings on the AT website only show those who achieve 70% or better.

Shown below are the statistics for the number of individual athletes from each of the Tasmanian Clubs who have thrown a senior implement weight in each of this year's Club Championship throws events.

The Club championships are not about being the best.............. but being prepared to have a go to represent your club as best you can......... and having fun in the process.

From the above stats you can see that most Tasmanian clubs have at least got throwers, who can get the implement out there and have a go.

North - a team from Tamar
South - full contingent from ES & NS, plus teams from OVA, though I didn't see how many.

First let me say not being one to stir the pot.......... but........given the above lack of support for this event on the Northwest Coast from Northern Clubs(apart from Tamar), I'm a little lost why AT has seen fit to take an event from Southern Tasmania, the north/south relay challenge (this is where the majority of the teams originally entered from) on February 14th and replace it with an event which originally was supported only by a single team from Tamar and a full complement of teams from the NWAC and hold it on the NW Coast.

Let's look at some simple maths here, support from:-

NW Coast = 3 teams
North = 1 team
South = 8 teams

Perhaps now the Northern Clubs will support this event and prove that the AT Board's faith in their support was founded.
_________________
Kev
