Was at the ATFCA national congress this week and was in a presentation from Pauline Davis Thompson who was a dual gold medal olympian. She was talking about the mental side of athletics as an athlete and a coach and how coaches can get the most from their athletes and assist their athletes to overcome the mental side of competing.

I would like to pose a question to anyone interested or with an opinion and preceeding the question I will qualify it by stating Pauline is from the Bahama's!

She stated very firmly that there is no scientific reason that has ever been shown as to why black runners are faster than white, both with sprinting more obviously and with middle distance and longer distances? She is talking about Jamacian's, Islanders, African's etc so any running distances.

Since I have been involved in this sport I have been continually told from experts right through to the man in the street that Australian sprinters will never run fast, our own elite level coaches and in fact the governing body have wiped sprints saying Australia will NEVER produce a sprinter that will run truely fast. When Pauline was informed of this she was flabbergasted and stated that we have been brainwashed for years that this is the case and in her experience she was regularly beaten by "white runners" coming through the years and grades in her career.

If you are an athlete of any persuasion over any distance related to running how do you feel about this? This lady is the first person I have ever heard say this. Coaches what do you think?

She also stated another thing that is true and we avoid. She stated that maybe one contributing factor is the black runners value their efforts much, much more than the white runners because for them it is defining, it is a way to improve their life and the life of their families, it can be a way out of poverty, etc etc, are we spoilt in Australia, do we make too many excuses, do we avoid competition, are we soft???

Asafa Powell ran more than 30 high/elite level meets this calender year and countless minor meets, why? because he has to run to survive, it is his job! that is almost a meet every week, he does not even have a sponsor! he runs for prizemoney just to live!

Have an opinion and don't be scared, it will be interesting to see whether the majority agree or disagree. I will state I believe Pauline is 100% correct!

African runners are the same. If they succeed they allow there families to live quite well (compared to normal) if they fail they live in poverty.

Knowing if you fail you can lose everything, including life, is a huge incentive to succeed.

The result you get is from the result of the work you put in. I remember training 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours a night 5 times a week plus 1 session of 3 hours, whilst working full time and studying. My results where okay, but I am damn sure if I gave up work and study it would of been better.

Now I wouldn't suggest doing that, but if you want to the best you need to put your energies into one thing only.

* Powell has been under contract with Nike since 2004, representing them in all his IAAF races, and agreeing to appear in various advertising campaigns for the company. Nike designed and built the Zoom Aerofly shoes for him, which were used at the 2008 Beijing Games. [94]
* GlaxoSmithKline, through its energy drink Lucozade, has sponsored Powell since he first broke the 100 m World Record in 2005. They honored his Beijing achievements in a small function in October 2008.[95]
* In January 2006, Powell signed as a global brand spokesperson for Nutrilite. Nutrilite products are sold through the Amway corporation. [96] On January 14 2009 Amway's Team Nutrilite announced the end of the sponsorship agreement with Powell.[97].

Powell no longer has any financial contract in place. Nike whom he runs for is basically replacing clubs in American track and Field, Addidas and some other shoe sponsors have basically ruined or replaced the club system in the states, for instance the most famous club SMTC has 1 athlete! If you do not run for one of these ccompanies you do not run, e.g get in races. Financial return for this honour is miniscule. Not enough to live on when you have to pay for an agent, manager, coaches, allied health professionals, travel, accommodation etc. If you run 9.9 every week you need all these people because to run that fast takes a massive toll on the body, possibly one reason Bolt runs faster times than Powell, Gay et al, he runs less!

The Amway sponsorship ceased early this year and was the only financial sponsorship in place, Nike pays for his gear and I can only assume that the other mob pay for his electrolite drinks??

The Jamacian girl whom won world champs in the 100m basically lives in poverty, her sponsors buy her food and she earns her income from racing and helps her family survive. The picture I am painting is one of to survive as a professional track and field athlete unless you are Usain Bolt you have to race almost every week for the whole year, very, very few track and field athletes are making a living from selling breakfast cereal. In fact as an example in Australia the only gold medallist from the recent Olympics to sign a major deal was the Rice girl from swimming, no one else.

Some pretty good research though, I certainly didn't know much of this before I came back from the congress, was very enlightening.

The only genetic difference between us and Jamaicans is a couple of genes here and there, one of which determines how much pigment is in the skin. None of them determine how fast we can run.

just to prove a point Asafa Powell's Pb when he was 17 was 11.45 Shocked how many of our male sprinters in Tassie who are told they are good, bad or indifferent have run that time or therabouts at same age or younger? What our challenge is unfortunately is to engage the talented sprinters, keep them in the sport and to improve our coaching? The need to understand the mechanics of power conversion is the difference.

Australian coaches are still following a model that doesn't quite work, not a bad model but not quite the best. Tasmania has sprinters talented enough today to be 10.80 runners or maybe faster, it is up to the current coaches to determine how this will happen and up to everybody to engage the talented athletes and help retain them in the sport Wink

A quick look at the IAAF all time lists will tell you pretty quickly that certain groups clearly possess some sort of advantage at them.

Exhibit A - 100m all time list. Good luck spotting many athletes without Carribean or West African descent.

What it can't tell is whether that advantage is due to cultural, motivational, genetic or other factors - or a combination of any or all of these. I would tend toward cultural and motivational factors as being the most significant. Certainly as Darren has said financial incentives are there for athletes from less developed countries and although stories of Kenyan schoolkids running to and from school are perhaps exaggerated they would certainly be far more active in childhood years than westerners increasing the likelihood of those countries producing more elite distance athletes. I don't care enough about swimming to bother looking it up but I would suggest Australia is probably overrepresented in most events in all time lists in that sport for similar reasons.

Chess' examples on this list obviously show up an abundance of non anglo saxon successes in events and he is right about the differing reasons however I don't believe genetics is one. Cultural is certainly one as is population I believe, it is harder to become a world champion sprinter from the USA due to having so many talented sprinters there, same with African middle and long distance runners, you need to be the best to beat the best every time you race.

I also believe that in these 2 examples coaching in Australia falls behind. We still hear of volume based programs for both event groups, long slow training! It does not work at the elite level because speed is the difference. In a sprinters case more biomechanical models need to be followed to get past 10.50 in the 100m and in longer distances we comonly see the Australian sit and kick mentality but at big meets when the early race pace is low we look uncomfortable and the Africans look at home.

So I believe (in fact in sprinting I know) that culture and technical execution are the main reasons. In sprinting the top male and female sprinters invariably work in the groups with the best technical coaches and looking at the tables these names keep cropping up. I was amazed at the national coaching congress how many coaches who have coached succesful Australian sprinters at international level had not heard of or didn't understand the biomechanical aspects of sprinting. I believe that Tassie actually has some very sound coaches in technical models, we just need to get these models to the right athletes, in Tassies case all athletes! Dedicated High performance centre at the track would also help Wink

Do we use the genetic dis-advantage as reasons for our shortcomings?

When I first started competing, 25 years ago, at the Domain, we had multiple 10.8 and quicker runners, now we have none (at the moment)

When John Quinn was TIS coach around 10 years (?) we had full 100m races where the slowest would of been 11.1 time.

Clearly the current era of committments is different, IE 7 day a week shopping compared to 20 years ago shopping only until midday on Saturday etc...

I include Darren's points on shopping and trading hours as part of "pop culture". Society in Australia is severely effected by affluence. Once upon a time as a child or teenager you may have to save money for a whole year to buy the "in thing", now mum and dad just buy it because the family has more disposable income (or credit). After school jobs or weekend jobs pay well above minimum wage so teenagers often have more money than their parents and just spend it aimlessly (this isn't a teenager bashing exercise just a reality). But guess what? this all means a lack of numbers on the track if people are working or prioritising spending, partying and being a socialite more than a sport them may be talented at. Lack of numbers has a negfative effect on pressured performance. So yes Darren is correct. Just a reminder to all is that unlike mobile phones, ipods, laptops, new latest fashion, mum and dad or even yourselves cannot purchase a 10.5 or 11.90! only dedication, perseverence and hard work can. Much of this is foreign to much of society unfortunately, young and not so young!
