Clubs who have entered for the State Club Championships on Saturday at St Leonards.
Club/ Mixed Under 16 / Open Female / Open Male
North West 0 1 2
Tamar 0 1 1
Riverside 0 0 0
Western Suburbs 1 0 0
Newstead 1 1 1
North Launceston 1 1 1
Sandy Bay 0 0 0
OVA 0 0 1
Eastern Suburbs 1 1 1
Northern Suburbs 1 0 0
Masters 0 0 0
total 5 5 7
Disappointing to see that some clubs appear to have not bothered to have entered teams, particularly when the Australian Club Championships are in Hobart in January. _________________ Kev |

Why should clubs enter? You don't need to qualify for the national clubs.
Good luck to everyone going to compete, I wish you all well. _________________ Darren A |

I would be extremely disappointed if this was the attitude of any club intending to put a team in the national championship. _________________ Kev |

So would I, although I am extremely disappointed with that change in rule.
I can say if I had an athlete who was not right to compete I wouldn't let them knowing they didn't have to qualify for the National clubs. _________________ Darren A |

Kev is correct it is dissapointing however I am aware of people trying to have the date changed ever since I have been involved in aths due to its proximity to national all schools. Whether we like it or not the majority of our athletes are juniors and as Max mentioned to me the other night the coaches organise comps like this not the clubs because ultimately the coaches tell their athletes (joint decision of course) whether to compete or not. I am not aware of any effort from the club my athletes are mainly with to enter a team and I believe it would be because of junior nationals and not needing to qualify for national club champs. I can tell you one thing that club will field strong teams for that competition in all groups!
** by the way most of my athletes told me it was too close to nationals! |

| I can't wait for the day that one of my netballers rings me the night before a preliminary final, and says she doesn't want to play, as it is too close to the grand final!!!!! |

I must say that this is my opinion, mind you I am also of the opinion that there should be an interclub in Hobart this weekend.
I have the opinion because of the cost, time and travel necessary to compete. i also don't agree with the change from subsidising travelling clubs, to putting prize money, which, if you win, using 14 athletes, works out at a Dominos Pizza each on the way home. I would much rather see the teams who travel (regardless of the venue) subsidised, and the medal be enough, than a nominal cash payment for the first eight teams!!
Is this a step towards a gold medal at individual state champs being worth 10 dollars, a silver eight dollars so on down to 50 cents for making the final??? |

I don't think there should be interclub in the south this weekend.
If I wanted to compete or my athletes needed to compete we would go to Launceston to compete either as an individual or for the club.[/u] _________________ Darren A |

Damo, I'm lost on your last comment. Eastern Suburbs will have around two-thirds of their National All Schools athletes competing, including two who are definite gold medallist prospects and others who are potential medallists.
Why the difference with your Club's athletes and why has your club made no attempt to put a team at any level in the Tasmanian Club Championships? Surely there is some kudos for a club to win a state title! This state title becomes a little empty if Clubs can't make the effort to enter. _________________ Kev |

More kudos for being the best national or state team at the National meet.
I understand where Damo is coming from, athletics is an individual sport, if I was away next week representing the state (I don't know when Nationals Schools are) I wouldn't be competing. _________________ Darren A |

From a non coaching background, but this comment came from a certain high profile coach (no longer in Tasmania) a few years ago. Our kids get used to running one race, no heats, no rounds, and then when it comes to nationals, they bomb out because they can't back up.
I am sorry but I struggle with why an athlete would not want to compete at supposedly the highest level in the state, the week before going to nationals. what is the best preparation for competition?? more competition!!!! |

Backing up in rounds yes I agree. We as coaches should of done the correct training and preparation months ago.
Basically the work has been done, resting and getting athlete right is where we are at 7 days from a big event.
I was at a peaking forum last night and the shortest peaking time frame was 10 days the longest was 3 weeks, Debbie Flintoff-King had a 4 week taper plan. The general consensus was the last competion prior to a peak (big meet) was 14 days.
But people are entitled to opinions on what an athlete and coach should do. _________________ Darren A |

I'm with Darren and Damo on this. Perhaps for throwers its different as the event is a power based event but most certainly with distance running and the longer sprints the turn around in terms of recovery to fully rested is longer than the period between club champs and all schools. Yes it's possible to compete every day of the week but there will never be a maximisation of performance. I have run all my best times off a minimum 10 day taper and in the recent past have not competed at tas club champs because of the close proximity.
Sandy Bay currently has the longest injury lists going around and this coupled with the proximity to all schools are the main reasons there is not a team from what i can tell. Nothing to do with "effort" or any other of those suggested reasons. _________________ 21/2/2004 Discus Throw

Sorry Kevin I didn't realise that you were of the impression that I was stating an opinion, I was merely guessing at why this is the case. However as a coach if I had an athletes competing at that comp within 7 days of nationals I would run the risk of flat performances due to the non ability to back up. Personally I think many of our athletes are not tough enough and a little precious however in my case sprinting is very scientific and without the benefit of hindsight a coach errs on the side of caution. Ryan is spot on from the athletes perspective and there are large differences between throwers and sprinters so that wasn't a great example, netball one wasn't that great either, team v's individual team, maybe soccer or something but I must say I would have thought my athletes not going to nationals or knockout would compete.
By the way I coach athletes whom are registered with Sandy Bay but it is not my club, I will coach any athlete from any club so I am as much in the dark on decision making as you Kev?? |
