Hi all, winter season is well and truly upon us once again and so far we are again putting in a strong showing in both the men's and women's competition. This is largely due to strong recruiting which is allowing us to have large numbers each event. I think that our current registered member list is almost up to 100 which is excellent and should be further boosted with the track and field soon to start. A big welcome goes out to all our new members who are competing with the club for the first time. It is great to have you all on board and doing the club proud by getting out there and competing. From what I have seen and heard I think everyone is going great and enjoying the competition which is the key to a successful season. With a little more time and experience a clean sweep of the winter premiership is not far away. Away from the competition you committee is still hard at work thinking of ways to improve your club. The new uniforms are just going into production and will soon be available for people to try on and place orders. Hopefully if all goes to plan new competition uniforms should be ready for the start of track season. Other uniform options such as hoodys, rugby tops and polos should also come into production some time early in the track season. Other activities the club is working on include a modernised constitution and the finalisation of the facilities development donation made by the club to Athletics Tasmania. The committee is also working towards improving the coaching resources available for the members by recruiting interested members to partake in the upcoming coaching course which is being run in August. Anyone who is interested should contact Athletics Tasmania for more information. The Olympics are also rapidly approaching us and as a club we wish Donna all the best in her quest for victory in the women's 3000m steeplechase. Special activities are in the pipeline for celebrating the Olympics up at the athletics centre so stay posted for more information. Keep up the good work.Mark Lyden.
Congratulations Tasmanian Schools X Country Representatives:
Gary Tilo ,Cara Tilyard, Fiona Smith, Ben Tilyard, Henry West, Zoe Moss, Ella Bouchier and Brendon HayLaunceston 10 Welldone to everyone who ran.
For the second year in a row, a group of dedicated Sandy Bay Harriers boarded the rent-a-bus and headed North for the Launceston 10. After a quick coffee stop at McDonalds and Lunch at Campbelltown, we made it into the smoggy city of Launceston. Some took the opportunity to rest while others decided that shopping was a higher priority. We were able to gather together and go for a quick 40min jog before our dinner at the Star Bar Cafe. The following morning we headed to the course keen to warm up as it was only 2 degrees. At least we could see the course this year! The starting area was very cramped with over 2000 competitors, but this year the organisers adopted electronic tagging which made out times more accurate. Everyone completed the race and some even achieved new PB's. The trip home was a slow affair with Sarah Pinto managing to disappear at each stop. After Campbelltown, she was banned from leaving the bus. Everyone had a great time and we all look forward to next year's race.Times: Paul Dannock 38:31, Chris Sullivan 33:56, Mel Shutt 41:25, Michael Sullivan 43:51, Anthea Bennett 44:30, Wayne French 40:14, Sarah Pinto 41:07, Daniel Clarke 35:17, Willie Yee 35:25, Olivia Gillie 40:26.
Secondary and Primary Cross Country at Symmons Plains 2008
It was a fantastic effort by all Secondary and Primary aged School kids at Cross Country at Symmons Plains. The fields were very large. Some races had 140 runners starting together. Great to see such enthusiasm. Sandy Bay Harriers school aged runners had excellent results.. The secondary schools event was held on August 1 after gale force winds up North and snow and rain down South. The actual day proved to be clear, sunny but chilly, and a bit breezy but good weather for Cross Country. The track was suitably muddy and rough but this did not faze our young athletes. Gary Tello came in third in the first race of the day. He was up against some tough opposition and did extremely well. Ben Tilyard put in a strong effort in the U/17 coming in third. Alex Hunt and Fin Stronach ran in the men's U/18 with terrific results up against strong opposition. Ella Bourchier and Sophie Ireland ran very strongly in the girls U/20 with Ella coming in at 2nd and achieving a place in the Tasmanian team. In the U/16 age group Henry West ran a neck to neck race against Clive Reekie from Kingston High. Clive pipped him at the post but Henry said he was very happy with his result. In this race Charles Haward and Hayden Thors ran strongly and placed in the top 20. U/16 girls was a fantastic run for Lily Salter competing in a huge field of 96 girls. U/14 girls race, SBHC had Cara Tilyard and Mira Johnson-Montesino racing. Both girls ran fast with Cara placing third and Mira not far behind. Mirand Allender came in 10th in the U/15 4 km race. This is a brilliant effort seeing as she has just come out of plaster and still recovering from a stress fracture. Brendan Hay blitzed them in the U/14 race and becoming a first time representative in the Tasmanian Team and Robbie Hunt ran strongly to come in 6th. Hugh Mathys reaped the rewards of his triathlon training with a good place in the U/15, 4 km.In the Primary School Cros s Country Girls Rule! Our littlest contenders are Zoe Moss, Madeline Carter, Inessa Corney, Fiona Smith and her little sister Jemma. Zoe had a terrific race achieving 1st place in her 3km U/12 race. Another 1st placer was Jemma in the 9 year olds 2 km race. Fantastic effort. Fiona placed as well coming in second and Inessa and Madeline were in the top 12 positions. The future bodes well with junior girls Cross Country running. Keep up the good work. Everyone ran excellently. It is a long trip to Symmons Plains and back again. The weather is always chilly...at least no rain. It is fantastic to see the junior's doing so well. I will cover myself by saying I have tried to include every SBHC member I could. If I have missed you out feel free to let me know in no uncertain terms and I am sure it will not happen again.

Athletics Tasmania's AGM
It was pleasing to have the services of Rex Morris acknowledged through the presentation of the "Coaches Recognition Award", which was presented at the meeting. Also presented was the award for "Coach of the Year" which was presented posthumously to our beloved Max Cherry. Also AT presented a number of "Merit Awards", to a number of worthy recipients. Included in this number was Lynne Lyden associate member of SB, in recognition of her contribution to athletics both as an athlete and an official. We also had two members of our club nominated and confirmed to positions on AT board. They were Marty MacFarlane who holds the position of Marketing Director and Stephen Foster who is the Finance Director, congratulations to both.Congatulations Donna.
Sandy Bay Harriers Club presented our Olympian Donna MacFarlane with a cheque for $1000.00 towards the cost of her Beijing endeavors. Donna's first heat will be on the 15th of August. You are all welcome to come up to the DAC to watch on the big screen. You can send Donna a message on her website (www.donnamacfarlane.com) or email donna@donnamacfarlane.comTravels to Europe
From the end of May till July I was lucky enough to travel to Europe with a good friend and an esteemed member of Sandy Bay and all round wonderful person. Of course Marty and I were also joined on this trip by Donna, Marcella and Gabriel. We stayed together in Ghent, Belgium for 5 weeks to live and train and allow Donna to get in some quality races. We stayed at a great little hotel where we were looked after by Norbert and his two children Katy and Bart. Norbert was an accomplished chef who used to cook for the cycling team CSC (their rider Sastre won the Tour de France this year) and Katy had her own restaurant, so we were thoroughly looked after in the food department. On the first morning, Marty and I spent two hours over breakfast. We spent our time at the hotel either dining, watching TV in the parlour, playing cards, bouche, teaching Marcella to tell the time, or building Gab boats out of Duplo. I think my favourite activity was sampling the extensive number of Belgian beers whilst watching the European Championships. The training facilities we used were fantastic. We had available to us a 200m indoor track with banked turns, a 300m flat indoor track, an outdoor track, two weight rooms, a 5km pinebark trail, and copious amounts of grass areas and trails to warm up on. All of this was located in the same precinct. On the trip we were also supported by Peter Fortune who has taken over Max's role as coach so combined with world class facilities and coaches we had an excellent setup. Surrounding the city of Ghent there was also forests where we did fartlek and long runs. My favourite session was a Sunday run I did when Donna was away at a meet. I ran from the hotel and within 20 minutes was in farmland which then gave way to forest. It was typical European woodlands and I saw people on horseback, collecting mushrooms, and strolling in the woods. If anyone wants to know anything more on my time in Belgium, or for more entertaining stories on my time travelling drop me a line. I'll also take this opportunity to say "Bye!" as by the time this gets sent aroundBy Ryan Foster
