Heat 2 - 1st Michael Bond, 2nd Shaun King, 3rd Simon Baptist, 4th James Scarr
The 2000 Bill Dunn Memorial 400m Hanicap race was held in very hot conditions, causing a number of withdrawals from the heats and final. The men's event (The Bill Bunn Memorial) had sufficient numbers for two heats of six. Heat One was taken out by Chris Ware from Jeremy Rae and Geoff Rayner. Heat Two was won by Michael Bond from Shaun King and Simon Baptist. Jeremy withdraw from the final comlpaining of tight hanstrings, enabling partner Mark Worley to gain a berth in the final.
The controversial decision by the handicapper to re-do the handicaps after
the heats was justified by a close fought final in which the first five athletes
finished within 1 second. Front marker Chris Ware looked to likely to be swamped
with 150m to go, with back marker Michael Bond storming through the field with
Shaun King and Baptist also in hot pursuit. Chris rose to the occasion however,
and held on to record a well deserved victory.
