The 2001 Bill Dunn 400m handicap race was held on Tuesday 13th March at the Domain Athletic Centre.

The men's event had sufficient numbers for two heats of eight. Heat One was taken out by Michael Sullivan from brother Chris, followed by Lewis Powell and James Scarr. Heat Two was won by Daniel Carter from Michael Bond and Baptist brothers. The ease with which some athletes were able to make the final did not go un-noticed by the handicapper and it was necessary to revise marks for the final. The handicapper was aided in this task with expert advice given by Mark Lyden.

The Final proved to be another epic encounter, with back marker Michael Bond making up good early ground to put himself in with a strong chance of victory. Out front, Michael Sullivan held on to an ever decreasing lead and as the eight athletes entered the straight it was anyone's race. At this point it appeared that the strength of James Scarr with his middle distance background would come to the fore but with a finish that surprised even himself, it was Simon Baptist who Triumphed, edging past Michael Sullivan in the last few metres of the race.
