The 2004 Bill Dunn 400m handicap race was held on Tuesday 2nd March at the
Domain Athletic Centre. The event was conducted as a straight final, with seven
starters in the men's race.
The Bill Dunn Memorial saw a record number of athletes put
their names down to contest this prestigious event and three heats of seven
were drawn up. However, in the last half-hour leading up to the start of the
race, there were more withdrawals than an ATM would suffer in a week and the
field was reduced two-thirds to become a straight final. Marc Cayzer was sent
off two seconds, a whopping 17 seconds in front of back marker James Scarr.
It soon became apparent that Marc’s handicap belied his running ability and
the race was all but over by the half way mark. Alex Humphrey led a tight chasing
pack home for second, ahead of James and Liam Carr-Davies.
