The 2003 Laura Triffett 400m handicap
race was held on Tuesday 25th February at the Domain Athletic Centre. The event
was conducted as a straight final, with four starters in the women's race.
The Laura Triffet Memorial saw a return to the track by Brooke Robinson after a substantial break from the sport. Last year’s winner, Cassandra Smith was also returning after a layoff due to injury. These two were flanked by Isabella Thomson off go and Kim Dutkowski from the back mark of six seconds. Isabella held on bravely from the front mark for most of the race but was unable to hold Brooke and Kim at bay, while Cassandra found her lack of fitness to be an even bigger hurdle than the harsh handicap she had been given. The race came down to a battle between Brooke and Kim over the last 50m and it was here that Brooke’s lack of racing really told and she faded, allowing Kim to record a well earned victory.
