The 2004 Laura Triffett 400m handicap
race was held on Tuesday 2nd March at the Domain Athletic Centre. The event
was conducted as a straight final, with five starters in the women's race.
The Laura Triffett Memorial saw three former winners line up in Jessica Lyden, Cassanadra Smith and last year’s winner, Kim Dutkowski. These three were joined by the much-improved Isabella Thomson and debutant Sarah Pinto. Cassandra was awarded the front markers position and began with a three second buffer from Jessica and five seconds from Isabella and Sarah. After her success in 2003, Kim was given the tall order of winning from a mark of nine seconds. However, she went out hard and by the half way mark had swept past Cassandra and put herself in with a good chance of victory. Not to be denied, Jessica, Sarah and Isabella hung on grimly and it was a four-way charge to the line in the home straight. With muscles swimming in a sea of lactic acid, Kim put in a final surge to edge out Jessica and claim back to back Laura Triffett Memorial titles.
