The 2006 Laura Triffett 400m handicap race was held on Tuesday 14th Feburary
at the Domain Athletic Centre. The Laura Triffett Memorial race for women saw
an excellent turnout of 13 starts - the most in many years and a marked improvement
on for years ago when there was just one female entrant. Previous winners Kim
Dutkowski, Cassandra Smith and Sophie Ireland were all in the starting lineup
and with Donna MacFarlane keen to show her speed over the 400m distance, a close
contest was promised. However, front-marker Cara Tilyard had other ideas and
she made a mockery of her handicap and never looked like losing as she strode
to the line to take her place in the history of the Sandy Bay Harrier Club.
Danni Smith edged out Sarah Pinto for second place, with Anthea Bennett and
Donna MacFarlane rounding out the top five. The latter produced the fastest
time for the evening with 60.64, fractionally ahead of backmarker Kim Dutkowski
who ran 60.92.
